Overview

It is estimated that there are more than 35 million Americans living with a physical disability. Equipment that allows these individuals to engage in active lifestyles is very expensive – in fact, for many, it’s cost-prohibitive. A single bi-ski runs upwards of $5,000 and training and expenses can make moving to the “next level” of athletic performance an insurmountable barrier for many athletes with disabilities. Funding provided by The Unrecables helps make it possible for more disabled people to gain access to this equipment and to the self-esteem that comes from participation in sports.

The Unrecables is always seeking volunteers for both event support and general office help.

Instructor And Volunteer Training

At the start of each season we offer an Instructor Training Weekend. Training includes Dry Land Clinics and small group sessions on the slopes. Students learn about various disabilities, equipment, teaching methods, and skill milestones for five adaptive disciplines: 3-track, 4-track, bi-ski, mono-ski, and visually impaired. Instructor candidates and volunteers are encouraged to try the adaptive equipment used by our skiers.

Thanks to Mammoth Mountain’s generous support of our adaptive ski program, our instructors and volunteers receive lift tickets for free ski time all day Friday and Sunday afternoon.

Currently, instructors and volunteers are responsible for their own transportation and lodging. Condo space can be booked on a first come, first serve basis through our Winter Trips Director. Space is not guaranteed until the deposit is received.

When volunteers are first brought into the program, they act as ski buddies. In this role, they ski along with a student and instructor, and assist the instructor in any way possible. One of the primary roles is to ski behind the student/instructor, and watch for other skiers/snowboarders. If an out of control skier/snowboarder comes to close to the lesson, the ski buddy encourages them to move away.

For some of the sit-down devices, a ski buddy may be asked to work with the instructor to load the equipment onto the chair. Since several of our students are only able to ski on the beginner slope, the minimum ski buddy skiing ability is to be able to ski under control on a beginner slope. However, since we do have adaptive students which can ski the entire mountain, ski-buddies who can ski at a higher level are greatly appreciated.
